The winners of the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery had multiple selections in this particular class. The No. 1 selection caught most of the attention with Zion Williamson, and rightfully so. However, the New Orleans Pelicans could have done better with the No. 4 pick.

Trading down from the No. 4 selection all the way down to No. 8 was an understandable decision. It’s the choice the Pelicans made after moving down that can be discussed within reason.

It’s still entirely possible that Hayes will emerge as a helpful contributor for the Pelicans. However, being an athletic big with an interior oriented skill-set is not quite as helpful to pair with a talent like Williamson as a shooter like Tyler Herro.

Now, the Pelicans still face a need to find more shooters to pair with Brandon Ingram and Williamson. Herro could have helped in this area and made it easier to consider making a trade involving Jrue Holiday to help further their rebuilding efforts.
