3. Cleveland Cavaliers
With the No. 5 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers made the decision to emphasize finding a backcourt partner for Collin Sexton. With Darius Garland, Jarrett Culver, and Coby White as the main options on the surface, the Cavs went with Garland.
So far, Garland has been underwhelming, but it’s not entirely fair to write him off. Not only was he having to adjust to the NBA level, but he was also coming off a torn ACL injury. He made it clear he never felt like himself during his rookie campaign.
There were some genuinely intriguing signs Sexton displayed in his development last season. Pairing him up with a shooter of Tyler Herro’s caliber would have been fascinating to see. There would have been minimal overlap in the two guard’s skill-sets.
It’s still possible Garland and Sexton can develop together and experience success as a backcourt. However, inserting Herro at the two-guard spot alongside Sexton could have created a cleaner pairing with greater size on the perimeter.
