Quentin Grimes, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, NBA Trade Rumors

In 2023-24, the New York Knicks can’t seem to stay out of NBA trade rumors. They’ve already made a blockbuster trade. The Knicks acquired O.G. Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors.

They may not be done making moves. It seems that the Knicks are interested in moving Quentin Grimes as well. He’s due for a contract extension this summer. Meanwhile, it seems as if Grimes isn’t interested in pursuing a future with the Knicks.

In all likelihood, he’ll be on the move at the deadline. The Knicks should find a taker for him. Grimes has proven himself as a solid 3-and-D guard, and he’s got room to improve.

Could the Houston Rockets make a move for him?

NBA Trade Proposal: Houston Rockets Land New York Knicks’ Quentin Grimes

New York Knicks Receive: G/F Victor Oladipo, F Jae’Sean Tate, 2024 Second-Round Pick (OKC via HOU), 2025 Second-Round Pick (OKC via HOU), 2026 Second-Round Pick (HOU)

Houston Rockets Receive: G/F Quentin Grimes

The Rockets have been in their share of trade rumors this year as well. This is a change of pace for this organization. For the last several years, the Rockets haven’t seemed interested in making moves at all.

After all, this team wasn’t looking to improve. The Rockets were tanking. This team tinkered on the margins and added some assets. Still, improving the roster hasn’t been a priority for the Rockets for some time.

This summer, everything changed. The Rockets acquired Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks in free agency. With their next picking slated to fall to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Rockets are trying to flip a switch. So far, they’ve been much more competitive in 2023-24.

Does this deal help them continue down that path?

Why The Houston Rockets Do The Deal

We think so. Some Rockets fans will disagree. They’ll say that they shouldn’t be adding young players like Grimes. This team ought to continue prioritizing impact veterans.

There’s some merit in that argument. At the same time, Grimes is already an impact player. This isn’t a wild swing at a young talent. Grimes is a proven 3-and-D, and a safe bet to improve this team.

After all, Jalen Green has had a wildly disappointing season. Some Rockets fans will be concerned that Grimes will block Cam Whitmore’s path to playing time.

That’s fair, but in the long run, Whitmore and Grimes may be the future at the 2 spot. This deal will force Green to either make tremendous strides, or it will force him out of town.

Should the Knicks send Grimes out of town?

Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal

Sure. They practically have to move Grimes. By all indications, he isn’t happy in New York. Are the Knicks going to extend an unhappy player this summer?

Still, some will question the Knicks return here. Could Grimes net them a first-round pick? If so, they should decline this deal. At the same time, he looks closer to a role player than a future star. The Knicks may struggle to find a first-round pick for Grimes.

So, they may settle for a trio of second-rounders. Meanwhile, Tate feels like a potential Thibodeau favorite. He’s a high-effort defender. His limited floor spacing is problematic on a Rockets team that lacks shooting, but the Knicks may find a use for him. They seem to be looking for impact players – that’s why they’re always in trade rumors.
