The NBA’s trade market can be fickle. Fans may assume that a particular player has a robust market. They may be wrong. Sometimes, certain factors can limit even a good player’s trade value.

Take Pascal Siakam of the Toronto Raptors. He’s one of the most popular trade targets on the market. Raptors fans are likely holding out for a massive return for Siakam. Unfortunately, that may not be the case.

After all, Siakam will be a free agent soon. It seems that he’s a bit picky about his next destination. That will scare off suitors who don’t think they can retain Siakam – which will limit his market.

Could the Dallas Mavericks take a risk on him anyway?

NBA Trade Proposal: Dallas Mavericks Land Toronto Raptors’ Pascal Siakam

Toronto Raptors Receive: C Richaun Holmes, F/C Maxi Kleber, G/F Josh Green, G Jaden Hardy, 2026 First-Round Pick (DAL), 2027 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL), 2028 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL), 2030 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL)

Dallas Mavericks Receive: F/C Pascal Siakam

The market works on several levels. Siakam’s specific market may have taken a hit. At the same time, the market has taken a more general hit for any seller.

What happened? Partially, the buyers all bought. For some time, several teams had a surplus of draft capital. Now, those teams have mostly spent their picks.

If the Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooklyn Nets, or New Orleans Pelicans don’t want Siakam, the Raptors may not find a suitor with multiple first-rounders to spare.

Moreover, the pick-heavy deals from the last two summers haven’t necessarily aged well. Teams may be weary about handing over their future to improve their present.

Should the Mavericks even give up this much draft capital for Siakam?

Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

Yes. if this deal is on the table, the Mavericks should take it and run. This team already has two superstars. They’d be serious title contenders if they could find a third star to play alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Siakam happens to be the perfect star. The Mavericks could use a solid defensive wing. Siakam can guard across positions and on the interior and the perimeter. With that said, the Mavericks may be most interested in his offense.

Siakam can be a secondary playmaker behind Doncic and a tertiary scorer behind the pair. This feels like a perfect fit -even at the cost we have Dallas paying.

Should the Raptors accept that price for Siakam?

Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal

If the Raptors wanted multiple first-rounders for Siakam, they should have moved him last summer. In all likelihood, that ship has sailed. This is a fair return for the Raptors’ star forward in light of the new market.

It’s not all bad. Hardy is a young player with some star upside. He could join Immanuel Quickley to form the Raptors’ backcourt of the future. Meanwhile, Green is a solid young player who can defend and hustle.

Sure, the Raptors are only landing one first-round pick here. They’re also landing three swaps. Toronto could win this trade if they can expedite their rebuild, and the Mavericks eventually fall apart. In that event, they’ll hope it’s still a buyer’s market when they’re ready to contend.
