After all, a higher-than-normal percentage of teams are competitive. That means that a higher-than-normal teams have already spent their assets. The number of teams with a surplus of draft capital who are looking to make moves to win now is slim.

Look at the Mavericks. This team is low on draft capital. The Mavericks may be able to exploit the market and capitalize on a buy-low opportunity. On the other hand, they might want to buy even lower and hang onto some of their assets.

It’s been a difficult year for Wiggins. At times, it has appeared as if his effort is waning. With that in mind, the Mavericks may want to steer clear of him.
At the same time, they’re getting him at quite a low cost here. Holmes isn’t even in their rotation. If Wiggins can return to his previous form, the Mavericks won’t regret flipping Kleber for him.
If he can’t? The Mavericks won’t love having Wiggins’ contract on their books. At the same time, it should be easy to move in a couple of years. By then, the Mavericks’ draft stock will be partly replenished.

In the end, it’s worth taking a risk on a bad contract to land a potential 3-and-D like Wiggins. Should the Warriors part with him?
Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal
The Warriors are thinking about Wiggins’ contract here. Their books are getting a bit messy. By making this deal, they clean those books up in a significant way.
After all, Kleber is on an expiring deal. Holmes has an extra year on his contract, but that’s insignificant. The Warriors are cutting ties with a player who’s having a weak season here, and saving a lot of money while doing it.

With that said, they may find some use for Kleber. He’s aging out of his prime, but he can still offer some floor spacing and defensive value. He’ll at least get a crack at this team’s rotation – if he makes the Warriors more competitive, he may earn a spot.
