The Portland Trail Blazers have been at the forefront of the top NBA trade rumors ever since Damian Lillard expressed his desire to be moved to a new team. Even after dealing Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks, a major focus remained on where Jrue Holiday would be re-routed to next as the Blazers add assets to continue rebuilding.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Blazers are trading Jrue Holiday to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, a 2024 first-round pick (via GSW), and a 2029 unprotected first-round pick (via BOS).

“The Celtics were among the teams at the very top of Holiday’s wish list in recent days, and expectation is Celtics are eager to retain him long-term, sources said,’ Wojnarowski wrote. “Holiday has a year left on the deal. Boston beat out several teams in both conferences with a significant trade package.”

Holiday can become a free agent next summer if he declines his $37.6 million player option for the 2024-25 season. The expectation remains that he will work with the Celtics to reach an agreement on a new long-term contract to remain in Boston and continue his NBA career.

Holiday created doubt regarding his playing future after making comments following winning the 2021 NBA Finals with the Bucks that he is comfortable with retiring after his current contract ends.

“It’s funny cause my wife and I had this conversation; I think it was two days ago. She was like, ‘Are you serious after this contract? Are you serious about retiring?’ I’m like, ‘Yes, I feel very strongly about it,’” Holiday said.

Holiday appears to have plenty left in the tank as he averaged 19.3 points, 7.4 assists, and 5.1 rebounds in 67 games last season, earning his second NBA All-Star nod. He will now look to help elevate a Celtics team that features Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis.
