Who is the best backcourt in the NBA? It’s a debate that we’ll always have. Every era has its star guards. When they come together, it can make for some explosive basketball.

Perhaps the Golden State Warriors Splash Brothers have been the standard for some time. With that said, they’re aging. Ja Morant and Desmond Bane of the Memphis Grizzlies might be the future. With that said, don’t forget about Trae Young and Dejounte Murray of the Atlanta Hawks.

Meanwhile, the Charlotte Hornets had an opportunity to assemble another candidate for the league’s next great backcourt. They didn’t. Many fans expected them to draft Scoot Henderson to pair with LaMelo Ball, but they chose Brandon Miller instead. Could they acquire Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat to round out their backcourt?

The Trade Proposal

Miami Heat Receive: G Terry Rozier, G/F Cody Martin
Charlotte Hornets Receive: G Tyler Herro

Here’s one thing we’ll say with confidence: the Miami Heat do not have the best backcourt in the NBA. In fact, they aren’t even close.

That didn’t stop them from making a run to the NBA Finals this season. The Heat have one of the league’s best frontcourts. Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo make up for any playmaking this team is lacking from its guards. As a matter of fact, the Heat made that run without their best guard at their disposal.

It’s led to a lot of speculation. Could the Heat make Tyler Herro available this summer? As a matter of fact, it seems widely known that they’d move him for Damian Lillard. Could they move him for another guard? How about Terry Rozier?

Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal

Well, let’s talk about the differences between Rozier and Herro. Why would one suit one of these teams, while the other would suit the other?

Rozier is the stronger dribble driver. He’s not as efficient off the ball. So, here’s the next question: what do the Heat need? They need a dribble driver. Rozier’s ability to penetrate and collapse the defense would serve this team well. Meanwhile, his relative lack of playmaking chops wouldn’t be an issue alongside Butler and Adebayo.

Meanwhile, the Heat are also acquiring Caleb Martin’s brother. These two 3-and-D wings work well in tandem. This trade would improve Miami’s chemistry while deepening its rotation at the same time. Should the Hornets put them in that position?

Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal

Let’s ask another question: why did the Hornets pass on Scoot Henderson? Isn’t it because they didn’t want a ball-dominant guard alongside Ball? OK – so why keep Terry Rozier?

The Hornets could use a more proficient off-ball threat alongside Ball. Someone who’s willing to come off screens and shoot threes off the catch. In other words, someone like Tyler Herro. He should have perfect synergy with Ball. Herro is an elite shooter who can create his own shot at times as well.

So, he’d give this roster better balance. With that said, Herro is the youngest player in this deal as well. The Hornets could be forming their backcourt of the future here. If they click, they could be one of the best in the NBA.
