We hate injuries. There’s nothing worse in professional sports. Injuries ruin careers. They can ruin a playoff series. Unfortunately, they’re a part of life in the NBA.
Nobody needs to tell the Los Angeles Clippers this. They’re well aware. The Clippers’ duo of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George has been held back by injuries for their entire tenure together.
Malcolm Brogdon of the Boston Celtics knows about injuries as well. Apparently, there are some concerns about his durability around the league. Could the Clippers trade for him anyway?

Injuries can also ruin a player’s trade value. How could it not? It’s been said that the best ability is availability. A player’s durability will always factor into their trade stock.
This deal only points to that fact. In theory, Brogdon should fetch the Celtics more than this. In practice, if he’s got a health concern, it’s going to be hard to get market value for him.

Of course, injuries aren’t the only factor that can hold a player back. We’re not exactly sure why Robert Covington didn’t see the floor with the Clippers last season. Perhaps the Clippers were just too deep. Would the Celtics have a use for him?
Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal
The Celtics have a few motivations to make this move. Are they concerned about Brogdon’s health? If so, they could look to move him on those grounds alone. Besides, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard can carry the guard rotation.
Moreover, Boston just lost Grant Williams in free agency. Granted, they added Kristaps Porzingis, but they could use a versatile defensive wing to replace Williams. Covington could do the trick.

Granted, we haven’t seen him in a year, but we’ve got a feeling that his game will still owe there. Covington is young enough that we shouldn’t assume an age-related decline, and he’s a low-usage player in the first place. Should the Clippers part with him?
Why The Los Angeles Clippers Do The Deal
For the Clippers, this is a gamble. Will Brogdon be able to regularly suit up next year? If not, theyre giving away two quality forwards for nothing. That would be unfortunate.
At the same time, the Clippers haven’t been able to find time for these two veterans anyway. Meanwhile, they badly need to bolster their guard depth. Suppose Brogdon is ready to suit up.

He’d be the best player in this deal by a long shot. Brogdon is a combo guard who can space the floor, defend, and set up teammates. His well-rounded skillset would make the Clippers a much better team in 2023-24. If he can just stay healthy, that is.
