In Atlanta’s case, this is a case where they are taking one step backward in order to take two steps forward at the same time.
In the first place, why did they acquire Murray in the first place? The purpose of this was to cover for Young’s weak defense. Among the best point-of-attack defenders in the NBA, Murray is one of the best in the league.
As far as LaVine is concerned…he is not. As a result, he is much more comfortable playing off-ball than he is on the ball. As a traditional off-guard, LaVine is one of the best in the league.
It is true that he is able to create shots for himself, but he is also capable of finding catch-and-shoot opportunities when he works off-ball.

Perhaps that offensive fit is more important. The Hawks’ defense will suffer from this deal, but the trade-off on the other end of the floor ought to make it worth their while.
