With the 2023 NBA offseason officially underway, things have been heating up in a big way with free agency about to begin. Both the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers are headed towards a very busy free agency and trade period. Quite honestly, James Harden has stolen the headlines with his likely trade away from Philadelphia.
Many had expected Harden to opt out of his current deal with the 76ers and enter free agency. Instead, he chose to opt into the deal and the two sides are exploring trade scenarios. Right now, there are two teams at the forefront of the rumor mill, with those teams being the Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat.
Another team that has entered the mix for Harden is the Knicks. New York has been looking for a bonafide superstar for years now and Harden could help them finally accomplish that goal.
Over at Bleacher Report, a potential trade between the 76ers and Knicks was thrown out on the table. Here is what that deal looked like. In exchange for Harden, Philadelphia would receive R.J. Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, Jericho Sims, a 2024 first-round pick (most favorable of Dallas and New York), and a 2026 first-round pick (top-10 protection).

Looking at the deal, both sides would have to feel very good about it. The Knicks would be getting their superstar to lead the way with Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle as major supporting pieces. On the flip side of the deal, the 76ers would be adding pieces that can help them remain in contention.
Assuming the 76ers do move on from Harden, Joel Embiid and company will need more firepower. Tyrese Maxey is without a doubt ready to step into a larger role, but they will need more offense. Both RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley can create their own shots and score at a high level.

Adding in two first-round picks simply makes the deal sweeter for the 76ers. It’s hard to lose a talent like James Harden, but this deal would make the pill easier to swallow.
All of that being said, it’s going to be interesting to see where Harden ends up. While the Clippers and Heat may be considered the front-runners right now, the Knicks should not be counted out.
