There is something inconvenient about the NBA’s salary cap. There is also a necessity for it. As a result, big market teams would have an unfair advantage over small market teams without it.

Too many star players would choose to sign with them over other teams. In order to preserve the competitive balance of the league, the cap was put in place. 

There is still the possibility that it can become a disadvantage for anyone at any time. There is a possibility that a team will exceed the cap and won’t be competitive enough to justify it.

As a result, they will need to clear space on their cap in that case. That’s the situation the Atlanta Hawks are in right now. Perhaps that’s the reason why they are expected to shop De’Andre Hunter this summer.
