This one may seem counterintuitive. The Atlanta Hawks are actually taking more money back than they’re sending out here. 

Meanwhile, the Hawks already have two starting bigs. They do not need Adams. Frankly, that’s basically the entire point here. 

The Hawks would start shopping Adams from the moment this deal went through. If they could find a team to take him (perhaps the Spurs?) while sending back less salary in return, this checks out.

The Hawks would be flipping Hunter for Kennard and a first-round pick.
