Why The Atlanta Hawks Do The Deal
There will be some Atlanta Hawks fans who will say this is counterintuitive. It is only a matter of time before Martin will need to extend his own contract. Yes, of course.
It looks like the Hawks are kicking the can down the road. As a result of this move, they will be able to free up almost $20 million in cap space on an immediate basis. They could use that money to sign a high-impact free agent this summer.
What if they don’t? Martin has shown signs of potential in the past. Because of his ability to finish in transition, he is a perfect wing complement for Trae Young. There is a strong possibility that he could become a Hawk in the long run if everything goes well.
It is important to keep in mind, though, that he is not going to command the same contract that Hunter did on the open market.

If the Hawks are able to get Martin for roughly half of what he would have cost in the open market, then this will be a good deal for them. At the very least, they will have cleared more of the cap if nothing else.
