The San Antonio Spurs may need a big man. On the other hand, they don’t need a star big.
After all, big men who protect the rim are abundant in this league. The Spurs could turn to free agency to satisfy that need. Meanwhile, it could be argued that they need to make a bigger splash at point guard.
Trae Jones is solid. He’s a high-feel, game-managing point guard who makes good decisions. With that said, his poor shooting and low athleticism make him unexceptional.

By contrast, Fred Van VanVleet can create his own shot off the dribble. He’s also a solid playmaker, and perhaps most importantly, a free agent. The Spurs should at least take a look at him.
If they land him, they might make the rest of the league a little more envious.
