Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal 

For the Suns, this deal has a couple of functions. 

For starters, it’s a salary dump. The Suns would be creating significant cap space by moving Paul for Tate. That alone justified this deal. 

What could they do with that space? In all likelihood, they’d be adding a couple of solid veterans in free agency. It could also give them more flexibility in a potential Deandre Ayton deal. 

At the same time, they’re also adding a solid player here. Tate is a stout perimeter defender who offers a little playmaking on the side. He’d be a contributor to this Suns team next year.
