Why The Atlanta Hawks Do The Deal
Here, the Hawks are admitting to error. Murray was never the ideal co-star for Trae Young. He was acquired to compensate for Young’s poor defense. Unfortunately, the two are a suboptimal pairing on offense.
By contrast, Paul George is likely a more suitable partner for the point guard. He’s a 3-and-D wing who can create his own shot, but will space the floor for Young when he’s making plays.
Of course, he’s also significantly older than either Murray or Collins. That’s why the Hawks are also getting a protected first-round pick in this deal. If all goes well, this move will work out for them.
It would be intriguing to see what the Hawks could achieve with Young after adding an elite wing and after moving on from players like Collins, who seems to consistently have an issue with how Atlanta is running its offense when it doesn’t involve him.

Managing to receive a future first-round pick — even if it’s a top-10 protected pick — would be an intriguing bonus for the Hawks to consider.
