Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
In the aggregate, this would be a loss for the Nets. After all, they acquired Finney-Smith and a first-round pick from the Dallas Mavericks by sending them Kyrie Irving. All told, flipping a star like Irving for Derrick Rose, a first-round pick, and a pair of second-rounders doesn’t feel great.
Fine. Irving is a sunk cost. His trade value was at a low when the Nets moved him. Now, Finney-Smith’s poor shooting has depreciated his value. That’s life in the NBA. With that said, this is still something.
Rose could be a useful player for these Nets – they could use a quality backup point guard. Meanwhile, a pair of second-rounders could be used in a trade down the line.
Where the Nets need to consider Finney-Smith’s shortcomings going forward is that they are in the early stage of a rebuild. We know what he is at 29. He’s a one-dimensional offensive player who isn’t elite at that one dimension but is a helpful, versatile defender.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Dorian Finney-Smith, New York Knicks & Brooklyn Nets Updates
The Nets could take chances on younger options with the minutes they’d be giving to Finney-Smith. It’s similar to how teams approach the NBA Draft. Why keep a lower ceiling option that has hit their max potential in the league when you can take a chance with other options?
