With that said Young’s defensive shortcomings improved this season. He’s still a liability, but he’s not as problematic as he once was. 

It’s possible that the right team could cover his limitations. If so, the Nets would have to be that team.

After all, they’ve got one of the best defensive rosters in the NBA. What they don’t have is a primary playmaker.

Young would fit the bill. He and Mikal Bridges could be the backbone of a formidable offense, making the Nets a two-way team.

Meanwhile, the Hawks do this deal for Thomas and the draft capital. Simmons is only a salary matcher. In fact, the Hawks are getting an extra first-rounder just for taking on his contract here. 

If they’d rather not, perhaps they could turn to New York’s other team for a deal.
