Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
One thing is obvious: if the Mavericks are able to retain Irving, they need to put all of their resources into building the best team that they can this summer.
This team has two identifiable needs. The first is a defensive big man. This deal does not satisfy that need – there will still be work to do.
On the other hand, the second is a strong 3-and-D wing. The Mavericks still need to replace Dorian Finney-Smith, who they moved n exchange for Irving. This deal has them doing so.
In fact, Wiggins’ abilities far exceed Finney-Smith’s. He can offer the same 3-and-D skillset, but he also provides an injection of secondary shot creation.
