Trading a star player on a rookie contract may sound crazy. With that said, teams are already trading players on rookie extensions. 

Just look at this summer’s Donovan Mitchell trade. Throughout most of NBA history, it would have been assumed that Mitchell was going to be a member of the Utah Jazz for some time to come. Those days have passed. 

In fact, we don’t even need to go that far to find an example. Just look at the Spurs. They traded Dejounte Murray during his rookie extension just last summer.

Player empowerment is an interesting development in the league. The players deserve empowerment. At the same time, teams may start to regularly respond by trading players as soon as there’s any smoke around them leaving.
