Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
It’s hard to say that this deal will make the Timberwolves better next season. At the same time, it could.
That’s not strictly a knock on Towns. His fit with this group is simply poor. The Wolves acquired Rudy Gobert to cover for Towns’ defensive limitations. Now, they’re learning that he’s even more limited on the perimeter at the 4.
Following this deal, the Wolves could pair Gobert and Jaden McDaniels in the frontcourt full-time. That’s a devastating defensive pair. Toppin can be a lead reserve who also makes positive contributions on that end of the floor.
Meanwhile, the Wolves are banking on Quickley’s untapped potential here. He’s flashed star potential on the Knicks, and he’ll be their new second option behind Anthony Edwards.

Coupled with the fact that the team is receiving as many first-round picks as they gave up for Gobert last summer here, and they may not be able to turn this deal down.
After all, who knows? One of those picks could land first overall.
