Typically, it’s some type of fatal flaw that holds a top pick back.
Largely, that speaks to the difficulty of scouting. We can predict player development to an extent – but only to an extent.
For example, look at Ben Simmons. In college, his defensive acumen and playmaking abilities were obvious. It was also apparent that he was a limited shooter.
What was not apparent was that his shooting limitations would lead him to gradually decline into one of the most passive players in NBA history.

Towns’ story is similar. In fact, his weaknesses were even more difficult to scout. Towns was not expected to be a defensive liability coming into the NBA, but so far, that’s exactly what he’s been.
