Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
Ironically, Thibodeau has already tried to set Towns straight. He coached him on the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Evidently, he wasn’t able to impart his defensive mindset onto the big man. That’s fine. The Knicks surely aren’t doing this deal to enhance their defense.
They’re doing it to lean into offense. By adding Towns to a core already featuring Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson, the Knicks would be forming a Big 3. They should be able to win plenty of games on the basis of their firepower alone.
Yet, there is something appealing, if counterintuitive, about pairing a defensive-minded coach with an offensive-minded roster.

Thibs should be able to get the most out of this group on the defensive end, and the offense should effectively work itself out.
