The Cleveland Cavaliers, with Donovan Mitchell at the helm, proved they were primed for this season’s NBA playoffs. On Saturday, their preparation was evident.

Mitchell led the charge with 30 points, while Jarrett Allen secured 18 rebounds, displaying a mental and physical fortitude not seen in last year’s disappointing first-round exit. They claimed a 97-83 win against the Orlando Magic in the opening game of their Eastern Conference series.

Mitchell emphasized the team’s evolution, stating, “We’ve moved past last year. This is our identity now, and it’s what we expect of ourselves.”

Evan Mobley contributed 16 points and Darius Garland added 14, showing a marked improvement from last year’s playoff where the team was ousted by the New York Knicks in just five games. The Cavs appeared rejuvenated and better equipped, having learned from past setbacks.

Despite nursing a knee injury, Mitchell was agile and effective, reaffirming his crucial role in Cleveland’s offense. His highlight first-half dunk signaled not just his return, but also a warning that the Cavaliers were a revamped force.

Orlando’s Paolo Banchero, despite scoring 24 points in his playoff debut, struggled with turnovers and the team overall shot a mere 33%. Cleveland’s defense played a significant role in stifling the Magic’s efforts.

“We needed more scoring,” admitted Banchero. “Although we had good looks, our execution was off. We missed too many free throws and three-pointers.”

Looking ahead, Game 2 is set for Monday at the vibrant Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. Mitchell, feeling the playoff pressure, only slept two hours before the game but found motivation in Phil Collins‘ “In The Air Tonight” as the match began.

Coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised Mitchell’s readiness for significant moments, highlighting his knack for rising to the occasion.

The Magic, less experienced in playoffs scenarios, showed disarray, especially Banchero, who often forced plays. In contrast, the Cavs are eyeing redemption after last year’s quick exit and maintained control throughout most of the game.
