Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal 

Obviously, we’re assuming the Mavericks retain Irving here. 

If they don’t, they’ve got bigger issues. They’ll have traded assets for a half-season’s rental. That isn’t likely to inspire confidence in Luka Doncic. 

Let’s assume they keep Irving, and avoid that doomsday scenario. In that event, the Mavericks need to start operating as a team that assumes they could win an NBA championship next season. 

That sounds like a perfect excuse to acquire Green. We’ve already outlined what he brings to the table. Green has ample title experience and he’s one of the best defenders the league has ever seen.

In other words, he’ll do a perfect job of building this team’s culture.
