Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal 

There is no doubt in everyone’s mind that the Knicks are interested in trading for a star. It’s likely that they’ve got their eyes on bigger fish than DeRozan at the moment. 

As a matter of fact, they tried to land a bigger star this summer. Donovan Mitchell was one of the players the Knicks pursued. It just so happened that they were unable to succeed in their pursuit. 

It is true that DeRozan is not a replacement for Mitchell, who is younger and more dynamic. On the other hand, he doesn’t need to be. With this deal, the Knicks have to give up a lot less than what they would have to give up in order to acquire the star. 

In the meantime, the Knicks have been surprisingly competitive this season. There is no doubt that DeRozan would make them a better team.

This is a win-now move for a win-now team. It’s hard to argue with that statement: No matter how big of a star DeRozan is (or isn’t).
