Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
The Jazz shouldn’t do this deal unless they’re getting a first-round pick.
After all, trading Vanderbilt for an interesting young player would be senseless. At 23, he already is an interesting young player. If the Jazz are moving him, it needs to be for future-focused assets.
This deal nets them one. The Philadelphia 76ers may not be in great shape by 2027. This could be a lottery pick. For a team in Utah’s position, that’s a premium asset.
Meanwhile, the Jazz may want to tank the rest of this season anyway. In that event, this deal is doubly helpful.

Mills won’t be as productive as Vanderbilt, and if he is too helpful, the Jazz can simply sit him. Even if it feels a little dirty.
