Generally speaking, teams require defense from their floor spacers. An elite playmaker can get away with poor defense if they’re instrumental enough to a team’s attack. 

At the same time, building around three star-caliber playmakers can be problematic if they’re all subpar defenders. it requires you to have three weak defenders in your starting lineup. Frankly, that’s too many liabilities for opposing teams to target. 

Just ask the Chicago Bulls. When they assembled their core of DeRozan, Zach LaVine and Vucevic, they must have known they were prioritizing offense over defense.
