Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal 

If the Bulls tank hard enough, they could give themselves a chance at keeping that pick. 

We saw it happen recently. Heading into the 2021 draft, the Houston Rockets owed their pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder with the same protections. The lottery Gods smiled on them, as the pick landed second overall, and the Rockets selected Jalen Green. 

The Bulls could have the same fortune. Still, even if they didn’t, this deal could be worth their time. They’d be setting themselves up to tank next year when they do control their own pick. 

They’d also be getting some valuable future assets. At 22, Smith still has potential.

Meanwhile, with Indiana’s pick, they’ll at least have a selection in the upcoming draft – even if it’s not in the lottery.
