The NBA’s lottery system can make for some weird dynamics. Yes, we’re talking about tanking. That’s the practice of intentionally building a losing team so that you can capitalize on draft odds.
It’s controversial, but it’s a viable means of acquiring top-end talent.
On the other hand, it’s not necessarily preferable. It isn’t always necessary, either. A team can set out to tank a season – but if they’re winning games anyway, at some point, they may simply accept that they’re good.
It may be time for the Indiana Pacers to accept that reality.
