This is precisely the formula for a modern NBA blockbuster: a star player in exchange for a lot of draft capital. Of course, you don’t have to tell either of these teams that. 

They both spent this summer setting that standard. The Hawks sent the San Antonio Spurs three first-round picks in exchange for Dejounte Murray. They were among the offseason’s biggest buyers. 

By contrast, the Jazz were easily the summer’s biggest seller. They received a combined 7 first-round picks in exchange for Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell.

In the process, they accumulated one of the biggest collections of draft capital in the NBA.

How they’ll use it is anyone’s guess. The Jazz could go about building their team through the draft. At the same time, their performance this season would justify making a win-now trade as buyers too.
