Sure, the heliocentric model has its shortcomings. The Knicks don’t have to worry about that – they don’t have a player who’d be suitable for the role. 

This roster is light on star power. Yes, they have talent. All 3 of R.J. Barrett, Jalen Brunson, and Julius Randle flit with stardom. On the other hand, none of them feel like players who could lead a team to a championship. 

Meanwhile, the upcoming NBA draft is full of such players. Everyone’s talking about Victor Wembanyama, but Scoot Henderson, Cam Whitmore, Nick Smith, and others could all be primary offensive options in the future. The Knicks could badly use one of them. 

In other words, this is a deliberate attempt to downgrade this season for the Knicks. At 11-13, they’re headed for another season of mediocrity. This deal ought to improve their lottery odds a little, and it lands them a pick swap in the process.
