Not all surprises are good ones. The NBA knows this well.

Some surprises are great. For example, say someone gives you a new car. That’s a pleasant surprise. On the other hand, say someone crashes the car you loaned them: not such a good surprise. 

Meanwhile, some surprises are just confusing. Take the Utah Jazz’s 3-0 start to the 2022-23 season. For some fans, that was a pleasant surprise.

On the other hand, fans who expected, and would prefer for the Jazz to tank may not have found it to be such a pleasant surprise. 

For those fans, the team’s loss to the previously 0-3 Houston Rockets on Monday night was a relief. For fans on the other side, it may have been a wake-up call.

The Jazz have some quality players, but they’re probably not playoff bound. It may be worth their time to sell off some quality players and really lean into a losing season. 

Could they start by sending Collin Sexton to the Miami Heat?
