Some Grizzlies fans won’t love this deal. They’ve grown attached to Adams. We understand – fanbases always love the guys who are willing to do the dirty work. 

Moreover, Adams is a solid rim protector. Here’s the thing – Turner is a better one. The opportunity to improve their defense is the first reason the Grizzlies would do this deal. 

On the other hand, the opportunity to improve their floor spacing may be the more significant one. After all, Adams is a total non-spacer. Having Turner in the middle would open up driving and passing lanes for Ja Morant. In short, Turner is an upgrade over Adams, and that’s why the Grizzlies do the deal. 

Some may also protest that Turner’s skillset overlaps with Jaren Jackson Jr.’s. Sure. On the other hand, some overlap is better than other overlap.

You can never have too much floor spacing, and Turner’s ability to defend the rim in drop coverage will allow Jackson Jr. to thrive as a weak side shot blocker and free safety.
