Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
This is a bit of a conundrum for the Wolves.
On the one hand, Russell’s pick-and-roll acumen makes him an intriguing fit alongside Rudy Gobert. After all, Gobert is among the league’s best finishers in those sets. On the other hand, unlike the Mavericks, the Wolves have two offensive stars to feed.
Any possession that runs through Russell doesn’t run through Karl-Anthony Towns or Anthony Edwards. Meanwhile, he doesn’t do enough to compliment either when he doesn’t have the ball. All told, the Wolves may be better off landing players who complement their pair of stars.
This deal lands them two. Hardaway Jr. is a great floor spacer who will make life easier on both stars. For that matter, so is Bertans. He’s a poor defender, but in lineups featuring Gobert while resting Towns, that weakness will be offset. His shooting could be essential to making the offense functional in those looks.
