Of course, it shouldn’t come as a revelation that the Mavericks need another ball-handler. Frankly, they may need more than that.

After all, this is a star’s league, and a one-star cast isn’t likely to cut it. In recent history, it’s taken considerably more than that to make a serious playoff run. Normally, the best team in the NBA has several star players.

With that said, the super team model may be dying. Last year’s NBA Finals featured two teams that had one All-Star each on them. Still, you need talent.

For example, Jayson Tatum may have been the only All-Star on the Celtics, but we all know Jaylen Brown is talented enough to get a nod someday. Otherwise, the Celtics were stacked with quality defensive players.

The same could be said for the Warriors. Steph Curry was their only All-Star representative last season, but Jordan Poole, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson are all roughly All-Star caliber players.

Meanwhile, as constructed, the Mavericks don’t have a player besides Doncic who’s likely to get serious consideration for the league’s midseason dance.

Does adding Russell change that?
