Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal

For the Warriors, there are financial and basketball reasons to do this deal.

Financially, they avoid making a decision on Green. Horford is on an expiring contract. Like Green, he’ll soon be due for an extension – but the circumstances will be wildly different.

Frankly, the Warriors may owe Green some kind of legacy pay. On the other hand, they may not be able to afford it. Swapping him for Horford allows them to get back a quality, comparable veteran for one more title run before they start making difficult decisions.

Besides the one to trade Green, that is. A former second-round pick, Green has been significantly more impactful than anyone expected coming out of the draft. He’s been the defensive anchor of a dynastic Warriors run – but that run may be coming to an end.
