Building an NBA team is not an exact science.
It requires balancing an almost immeasurable number of variables. Sure, there’s a blueprint: land a star, get him a co-star and surround them with players who complement them. On the other hand, that’s easier said than done.
For example, suppose you land a star with one glaring weakness. You should get him a co-star who counts that quality as a strength, right? What if you do, and that player has his own weakness – and it doesn’t complement your star player’s strengths?
The Atlanta Hawks may have landed themselves in that situation. Trae Young is a remarkable offensive player, but he struggles on the defensive end of the floor.
