Why The Detroit Pistons Do The Deal
Is it possible that the Pistons had a contingency plan all along?
After all, many observers are expecting teams to make midseason moves to bottom out. From all appearances, the Pistons acquired veterans with the intention of improving. Is it possible they acquired them with the intention of trading them?
Probably not. With that said, the Pistons could have a Plan A and a Plan B. It’s entirely possible that they intend on competing this year, and would be open to a trade if they can’t.
In that event, this deal would make sense for them if they’re still a lottery team by midseason. In all likelihood, they’d sit Westbrook for the remainder of the year.

In other words, they’d be moving three quality veterans without receiving any in return. That sounds like a smart way to rack up some valuable losses.
