Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal
Some Bulls fans will balk here as well. After all, DeRozan is, again, coming off of a fringe MVP-caliber season. This is all they’ll get in return for him?
Here’s the deal: 2021-22 was probably the best season of DeRozan’s career. He’s 33, a poor floor spacer, and a mediocre defender – at best. Realistically, rival front offices are aware of all of those facts.
Moreover, if DeRozan declines in 2022-23, his trade value will decrease far below this. With that in mind, selling high on him to land an unprotected pick and a protected one could be a wise decision for the Bulls.
It makes particular sense given their roster. The Bulls have an odd mix of young and old players. Given their 46-win season and first-round exit in 2021-22, leaning into the youth movement may be logical. A core group of LaVine, Ball, Patrick Williams, and others remains intriguing, and adding draft capital to it can only help.
