Of course, you can’t say the Hornets haven’t tried. Being a small market team can be a significant disadvantage. 

In fact, they were trying to land Ball a co-star when they signed Gordon Hayward. Many thought the Hornets were overpaying for his services. Perhaps they were. At the same time, often, that’s how small market teams are able to acquire talent. 

With that said, with the benefit of hindsight, the Hornets may not have committed so much to Hayward. While he remains a productive NBA player, it has become clear that he’ll never quite get to the version of himself we saw before a devastating 2018 injury. 

By contrast, DeMar DeRozan is only getting better. Chalk it up to durability, and a relentless work ethic.
