Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal 

Firstly, we’ll note that the Bulls can’t do this deal until after January 15th. They recently extended LaVine, so there are restrictions on moving him until that date. 

If the Bulls are exceeding expectations, they should push forward. On the other hand, if they’re in the middle of the pack (or worse) it may be time to face a harsh reality: this team isn’t winning an NBA title. 

If the front office reaches that conclusion, perhaps blowing up their core would be in everyone’s interest. In that event, this is a solid deal for them. If we look to the Donovan Mitchell trade for precedent, it seems fair – the Bulls are receiving one less pick swap because LaVine is two years older than Mitchell.

Still, they’re getting a solid return of draft capital, Williams and Tillman are both young enough to be part of their new core, and Jones should have his own trade value down the line.

After all, this would likely be the first of several deals for the Bulls. DeRozan would likely net a solid return on his own, and they should be able to get something for Nikola Vucevic, too. Should the Grizzlies be the first buyer at their fire sale?
