Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal

On the subject of DeRozan’s improvement, one of the most significant areas he’s grown in has been playmaking. Over the last couple of years, he’s gone from having a reputation as a shot-chucker to being known for setting his teammates up. That’s important here.

After all, the Raptors are trading their starting point guard to bring him back. Malachi Flynn has flashed potential, but he’s not ready for starting duties on a team with playoff aspirations. We say all of that to ask the following question:

What if DeRozan was the point guard?

It’s a bold vision. At the same time, these Raptors are no strangers to boldness. In fact, they started Pascal Siakam at the 5 last year, choosing to maximize the number of playmaking wings they had on the floor at any given moment.

DeRozan certainly fits that vision. In fact, a starting lineup featuring him, Gary Trent Jr., OG Anunoby, Scottie Barnes, and Siakam would be among the biggest and most versatile in the NBA.

Bringing in DeRozan to run point may not be on the Raptors’ agenda. Still, if they kept an open mind to the notion, it could raise their ceiling significantly in 2022-23. What does this deal do for the Bulls?
