Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
Like any rebuilding team, the Spurs have two strong and interconnected reasons to move any quality veterans.
The first one is obvious: the Spurs don’t want to win games in 2022-23. In all likelihood, they’ll be more concerned with maximizing their lottery odds. Having two helpful veterans on the roster does them no favors there.
Moreover, getting them off the team helps clear room for their younger players. The Spurs ought to be featuring players like incoming rookie Jeremy Sochan and soon-to-be sophomore Joshua Primo next season – they don’t need them competing for playing time with McDermott and Richardson.
Perhaps the Spurs would prefer an unprotected first-round pick for their two veterans. Unfortunately for them, we don’t think that’s market value. Still, a young player like Okogie and swap rights with Dallas ought to be enough for them.
