Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
As it stands, the Mavericks have rumored interest in Crowder. It’s not hard to see why.
With that said, he doesn’t solve their biggest issue – secondary ball-handling. Having lost Jalen Brunson in free agency this summer, the Mavericks are lacking playmakers behind Luka Doncic. Still, they could stand to add another strong wing as well.
Moreover, acquiring Crowder will unlock some interesting lineup combinations this season. For example, Christian Wood’s defensive shortcomings could be masked when flanked by Crowder and Dorian Finney-Smith. Alternatively, the Mavs could slide Maxi Kleber into Wood’s spot, giving them three front-court players who space the floor and defend.
Basically, a contending team can’t have too many 3-and-D wings – especially when built around a heliocentric playmaker like Doncic.

In a worst-case scenario, Crowder squeezes Reggie Bullock out of the rotation. That’s fine. It happens on rebuilding teams, and the Mavericks would likely be able to get value by trading Bullock elsewhere.
