Why The Cleveland Cavaliers Do The Deal
It’s worth noting that the Cavaliers didn’t necessarily move Markkanen because they didn’t like him. In fact, he had a strong season despite having shifted down a position (or two) for them.
The Cavaliers moved Markkanen as part of the Donovan Mitchell trade. We wouldn’t assume that they’re out on their big ball experiment. Enter Aaron Gordon.
In fact, Gordon is closer to being a traditional 3 than Markkanen. Granted, he’s spent more time at the 4 in recent years. Still, Gordon is 6’9 with decent lateral mobility and outstanding run and jump athleticism. If Markannen can play on the wings, so can he.
Of course, the Cavs wouldn’t need to start Gordon, either. They could go with the sweeter shooting Cedi Osman at the 3 and use Gordon as a super sub.

In that event, expect Gordon to see time at every frontcourt position.
After all, the NBA is a positionless league.
