The Grizzlies are too good to tank. We’ll start there. Even with Jackson Jr. on the sidelines, there is too much talent here for them to bottom out.
With that in mind, they might as well stay the course in 2022-23. If that’s the plan, making marginal roster upgrades could be smart. Is McDermott the right upgrade?
We think he’d be a nice addition. For what it’s worth, he’s not nearly a Jackson Jr. replacement. Jackson Jr. is an elite defensive player, while McDermott is below average on that end. Still, starting McDermott at the 4 would actually improve Memphis’ spacing.
With that said, McDermott isn’t strictly in addition for 2022-23. In the following season, Jackson Jr. should be back at full strength.

In turn, the Grizzlies will be contending. Having bench depth will be vital, and having one of the league’s most consistent floor spacers in McDermott will be especially helpful.
