Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
The NBA is a copycat league. If the Spurs want to get an idea of what they might get for McDermott, they don’t have to look very far.
After all, the Utah Jazz just traded Bojan Bogdanovic. He’s a very similar player to McDermott – a wing who provides elite floor spacing and subpar defense.
With that said, Bogdanovic is better. He’s less of a defensive liability, and can actually create his own shot whereas McDermott is more of a standstill shooter.
In other words, the Spurs would be lucky to get this return for him. For an organization in their position, taking consolidating a few future second-round picks for a late first-round pick in the 20223 class is helpful.

Moreover, that’s not the only benefit of this swap for the Spurs. McDermott is good, and the Spurs want to be bad. They can also get off the $13.75 million salary he’s owed in 2023-24.
