The Minnesota Timberwolves showcased their resilience and depth in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals, overcoming the absence of starting center and likely NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert, due to the birth of his child.

The Timberwolves adapted and thrived without their defensive anchor, dominating the Denver Nuggets 106-80 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.

“When you don’t got the Defensive Player of the Year, you gotta step your game up,” Karl-Anthony Towns said, acknowledging the challenge of playing without Gobert. “We understood the challenge. We just wanted to come here and find a way to win the game.”

The Timberwolves’ ability to rotate their big men, including Towns and Kyle Anderson, at Nikola Jokic helped maintain a strong defensive presence. Anderson, in particular, played a crucial role in containing Jokic, limiting him to 16 points and 16 rebounds.

“It worked in our favor tonight. We made shots, they didn’t. That’s it,” Anthony Edwards said, attributing the Wolves’ success to their ability to make shots and play tough defense. “They’re the defending champs, so they won’t come out and play like that again in Game 3. We need to be ready to take their punch.”

Edwards also emphasized the importance of being proactive, rather than just reacting to the Nuggets’ attacks. “When we huddle up, I tell the team that we’re not just going to take their punch – we’re going to punch too. They’re not the only ones who can come out swinging. Whether we’re up 3-0 or 2-2, we’ll come out punching too. So, they need to be ready to take our punch, and we’ll be ready to take theirs.”

The Timberwolves’ dominant performance was a testament to their ability to adapt and overcome adversity. Despite Gobert’s absence, they found ways to exploit the Nuggets’ weaknesses and capitalize on their own strengths.

As the series shifts to Minneapolis, the Timberwolves will look to close out the Nuggets with wins in Games 3 and 4. With Gobert expected to return, the Wolves will be even more formidable, and their depth and resilience will be crucial in facing the defending champions.
