Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
To be clear, this doesn’t solve every problem in Dallas either. This is not the type of blockbuster deal that aims to fix each team involved – instead, it finds each making marginal improvements at a marginal cost.
The Mavericks, in time, will likely need to find Doncic a co-star. Nunn isn’t that. At the same time, he could contribute towards improving the Mavericks ahead of 2022-23.
For what it’s worth, this team does not currently look better than they did in 2021-22. Losing Jalen Brunson to the Knicks in free agency was a tremendous blow.
Yes, adding Christian Wood will offset some of Brunson’s lost offense, but only some. The Mavericks still need a secondary ball-handler.

Nunn isn’t on Brunson’s level. Still, in the aggregate, losing Brunson to add Wood and Nunn could actually represent an offensive improvement for the Mavs. In any event, they have a vacancy, and Nunn fills it.
